The Summer Reading Camp is designed to help children with their reading skills. It runs for 2 weeks, meeting 3 hours each morning with a variety of different activities to help the children. It is open to the community and many past students have been referred by local school teachers and learning assistants.
The Summer Reading Camp was started by a school teacher who served as an elder in our congregation. He was working with Laubach Literacy and noticed that if a child was having reading problems in Grades 1 to 4, that could negatively affect them the rest of their lives. He used the Laubach material and recruited and trained teenagers to tutor the young students one-on-one in a "camp" setting held in our church facility. In 2010 Math was offered and taught in the same way.
After 20 plus years in operation the Summer Reading Camp is shutting down. It is believed that in many ways school reading programs such as 1 to 1 is now meeting these needs in the broader community. Thanks to all the volunteers and leaders who took part in this program.
